5G Pilot Directory
Meet our 5G pilot projects directory, containing information on all projects on 5G networks co-financed by the Spanish public entity Red.es through the European ERDF funds, throughout Spain.
The 5G Andalusia pilot, which was awarded in the first call for Red.es grants, includes 32 use cases, a duration of 30 months and a budget of more than 25 M€. The project, led by Vodafone, will focus on different areas such as agriculture, healthcare, smart cities and territories, security and defense, society, digital economy and culture, digital transformation and tourism. There are ten use cases that experiment with virtual reality and augmented reality in different areas, five that revolve around drone applications and three use cases that explore facial recognition, among others. For its development, a 5G network will be deployed at several points in the provinces of Malaga, Cadiz, Seville, Huelva and Jaen: Seville’s urban environment (historic center, Isla de La Cartuja, Real de la Feria and FIBES environment), Malaga’s environment (Malaga center, Andalusia technology park, María Zambrano station, Digital Content Pole and Automobile Museum), the port of Huelva, Guadalema de Quinteros, the Airbus factory in Puerto Real, the port of Algeciras and the Atlas aerodrome in Jaén.

5G Podcast #3: 5G Technology That Will Save Lives
In the second call for Red.es grants, the ‘5G Andalusia Private Networks’ project, led by Telefónica I+D and Nokia, was awarded. It includes 5 use cases to be developed in the province of Malaga, in the fields of security, smart cities, education and industry. Its cost is about 778,000 euros. 5G Private Networks Andalusia’ will count with the city council of Malaga, the city council of Torremolinos, the University of Malaga, TDK-Electronics, Port of Malaga and Intel as collaborating agents.

The 5G Pilot in Castilla y La Mancha has 3 use cases in the television, health and tourism sectors to be developed in Toledo and Talavera de la Reina with an investment of 1.2M€. The project, led by Telecom CLM, Furious Koalas and Amanto Soluciones Toledo, counts with the participation of Watchity and BTesa, SESCAM as client and the support of the Junta de Castilla La Mancha.

The ‘5G Catalunya’ project, with a budget of €5.39M, consists of seven use cases oriented to develop solutions for urban mobility, remote education, the industrial sector, remote purchasing, audiovisual transmission, security and emergency management in the urban environment and the construction of a neutral multi-operator network to provide connectivity in areas with high seasonal occupation, such as the beaches of Barcelona’s coastline.

Podcast 5G #2: Barcelona, a smart city 5G
This project has a budget of 10.1 million euros for the development of 15 use cases . Among them: the development of a robotic arm that will help the Valencian Institute of Oncology (IVO) in the remote detection of skin cancer; the development of transport robots for the industrial sector, applicable to inspection and maintenance tasks in critical areas such as electrical and railway infrastructures; or the use of autonomous robots connected and remotely controllable for the achievement of more efficient distribution chains.

Podcast 5G #4: 5G, the master key to precision agriculture
The project in Extremadura, ‘Pilotos 5G en Cáceres’, has a budget of €3.14M to develop 5 use cases for immersive training in health and heritage, autonomous vehicle mobility research and power supply control. The initiative, led by Gamma Solutions, has the participation of the Polytechnic School of the University of Extremadura, the Jesús Usón Minimally Invasive Surgery Center and the City Council of Cáceres, with the support of the Regional Government of Extremadura.

The project, which was awarded in the first Red.es call for proposals, includes 8 use cases, a duration of 24 months and a budget of more than 11 M€. The project will focus on event broadcasting, the connected car (C-V2X), monitoring of railway infrastructures using drones, and Industry 4.0 with three use cases based on augmented reality techniques, fixed wireless access (FWA) and health (robot for remote ophthalmological diagnosis). Use cases, in addition to 5G network experimentation, include the development of artificial intelligence applications and algorithms. To this end, a 5G network will be deployed at different points in the Galician provinces: the Navantia pavilions in Ferrol, the RC Deportivo de la Coruña facilities at the Riazor stadium, Abegondo, the Cereixal tunnel on the A-6 and the urban centers of the cities of Vigo and Orense.

Podcast 5G #1: The democratization of ophthalmology
The project selected in the second call has a budget of more than €9M and involves Orange in a joint venture with Cinfo Contenidos Informativos personalizados, Gamera Nest and Optare Solutions. Other agents such as the Xunta de Galicia, the City Council of Santiago, the Galician Health Service, the University of Vigo and the Galician Radio and Television Corporation, among others, are also collaborating. Use cases will be developed for the agricultural sector, education, gaming, event broadcasting, security and tourism.

5G Podcast #4: 5G, the master key to precision agriculture
The ‘Telefónica 5G Madrid’ project includes 8 use cases for the sectors of industry and logistics, tourism, education, health, drones and television production of events, which will allow testing the real usefulness -and applied to business- of the new 5G capabilities. The initiative has a total cost of nearly €2.5 million. The project has Ericsson, Intel and Roche as collaborating agents and El Corte Inglés, Grupo Meliá, Hospital Universitario de La Princesa, Instituto de Empresa, Sociedad Estatal de Correos y Telégrafos and Telefónica Broadcast Services as use case customers.

The project has a budget of more than 7M€ for 9 use cases and involves Orange, Euskaltel, R Cable, Xfera ZTE Spain, ZTE Managed Services Southern Europe, Vicomtech, Ceit IK4, Datik, Compañía del Tranvía de San Sebastián, Gestamp Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferro, and Ikusi. In industry, applications using augmented visualization and remote operator assistance will be developed. The monitoring and control of production processes through 5G technology will also be tested. In addition, various activities will be developed to address the different aspects of cybersecurity involved, asset maintenance, vehicle components and mass training services.
